We are all trying to be somebody. Someone the world will see and recognize as great or perhaps the complete opposite, someone hiding in the shadows of life. But what we really need is not to be someone or something else but to be our real self.

To be our real self, one needs to understand who we are and what we are and these are two questions we have been asking ourselves from one generation to the next.

So let’s start with what we are. What we are is a man created in the image of God. We are not a science experiment nor super hero. We are not an outcast of society nor a product of evolution. We are however created in the image of God and if we can understand that, that changes who we are.

Who we are, is a man, created to worship his creator. That urge, that longing to be filled by something greater than oneself is the “God vacuum” that is inside of us that can only be filled by God himself. That is why religion does not work. That is why salvation by works and actions does not work. That is why when we achieve all that we have set your minds to and yet we are still empty inside, does not work. The only thing that satisfies the soul of a man is his relationship with God his creator, for this was the reason for mankind’s existence.

We are made to worship our creator and when we worship the wrong things like, business, success, sport, love, adventure etc, we fall short of the presence of God in our lives.

We fall short of our real self and we wear a mask of pretense. Pretending to be the greatest, whether with colleagues, family or friends, we’re the man. We got it all figured out. Or we wear a mask of shame or regret, not worthy of anything in life, not worthy of love, not worthy of God’s attention.

But God does not look at man and what we do, or don’t do in our pretense to be or not to be someone or something. God looks at the heart.

God says: I made you, I formed you, I gave you life. Look to me your creator for you are wonderfully made. Seek me with all your heart. Call me and I will answer you. Abide in me and I will abide in you. Know me so that you can know yourself.
