Inspiring men to be men

Being You

One of the biggest questions asked in life is “Who am I”

There is no quick answer to that question, but I would like to look at “Who am I not”

The truth is that we will never be that guy, nor have what they have, because we are individuals with our own uniqueness and purpose in life.

I remembered that when I was in junior school I played a lot of soccer (football) both for the school and for a club. For the school I played goalkeeper and for the club fullback or midfield. One day I was invited to go provincial trails, and I went in my goalkeeper kit on, but applied to trial in midfield with the coach still asking if I was there for goalkeeping and he was perplexed when I said midfield.

The problem was that I was – in my mind – a good goalkeeper, but the cool kids were those who played centre and wing and I wanted to be cool like them. So instead of being myself and playing in goal, where I knew I was better, I went to a position I knew that I was “average” in, because I wanted “cool status”.

I played out of position and not in position. This set me up for failure. Trying to be cool, trying to be someone or something else, trying to be “one of the guys” instead of being me.

Ephesians 2 v 10: “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (NIV)

The Amplified Bible says “taking paths which He set so that we would walk in them”

So today, let’s take the paths that He set for us, not the paths that He set for someone else. Our path, our present, our future, that He prepared in advance for us.
